Secure your account and protect your retirement savings
Just like with any financial account, you need to keep your retirement savings secure.
First step to securing your account
Start by registering your account online. This prevents others from registering in your name.
Setting up and properly managing your online account will help prevent fraudsters from registering in your place. Then, sign in to your account regularly to check in on your savings and monitor for any unusual activity.
When you do your part to keep your account safe online, we’ll back you up with our Cybersecurity Guarantee.1 If someone takes cash from your John Hancock covered accounts,2 through no fault of your own, we’ll reimburse your account the amount of cash taken.
Follow these tips
Rules for creating a username
- Create a unique username for your account.
- Pick a username that’s personal to you and difficult for others to guess. This should be something only you know.
- Don’t use your Social Security number.
Rules for creating your password
- Create a unique and strong password that will be hard for others to figure out.
- A password may contain a random combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters (e.g., @, #, ^, %) and is at least eight characters long.
- Consider choosing a passphrase (and not dictionary words)—a short phrase that’s easy for you to recall, using only the first letter of each word in the phrase and adding special characters. For example, “I like toast and eggs for breakfast on weekends” can be changed to “Ilt&e4bow.”
Mobile phone number and email address
To enhance security further, you’re required to add a mobile phone number and personal (nonwork) email address to your account profile. This allows us to send you messages when a transaction or update occurs on your account to confirm it was actually initiated by you. If you don’t recognize the transaction, contact us immediately so we can act quickly to protect your account.
Keeping your information up-to-date helps protect your account
Check your account regularly to make sure it's up to date. Sign in to your account and choose "My Profile" to review and update your information.
